Adrian Belew Quits Nine Inch Nails

Just a day after Nine Inch Nails unveiled a new song and announced some upcoming tour dates, the band’s most celebrated member (not counting mastermind Trent Reznor) has apparently left. Veteran guitar hero Adrian Belew posted a brief update on his Facebook page, stating simply, “It didn’t work.”

Belew had played with the band several times over the years and joined on as a full-time member in February. But as the Sept. 3 release date for Nine Inch Nail’s new record — their first in five years — approaches, he said he would no longer be part of the project.

His first post, which has since been taken down, was much lengthier than the succinct one now at the top of his Facebook page. According to Consequence of Sound, Belew originally wrote, “Hey folks, before this goes too far let me say this: I greatly respect trent and the music he makes. no one is at fault. we both agreed it just was not working. I’m sorry to disappoint anyone. that really hurts. but NIN will do an amazing show and I am back where I belong: creating FLUX.”

Last month, Eric Avery, the former bass player for Jane’s Addiction, also quit Nine Inch Nail’s new lineup. He also announced his departure on Facebook.

Meanwhile, Reznor and what’s left of the retooled Nine Inch Nails prepare for ‘Hesitation Marks,’ the first album released under the band name since 2008′s ‘The Slip.’ But he’s been busy since then, scoring movies like ‘The Social Network’ and ‘The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo’ and recording and playing with his other band, How to Destroy Angels.

Nine Inch Nails’ world tour is set to start in late July with a festival appearance in Japan before swinging through the states in the fall and wrapping up at the end of November in Canada. Presumably, Belew’s replacement will be announced soon.
