Eddie Van Halen Donates 75 Guitars to School Music Programs

Being in the school band just got a whole lot cooler for some of the kids in the Los Angeles area: Eddie Van Halen has teamed up with the Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation to donate 75 guitars from his personal collection to schools that don’t have enough funding to pay for instruments. For Van Halen, it was a simple case of giving back — as he put it simply, “Music education and families are dealing with the economic times, and I wanted to help them.”

Black Keys Drummer Trashes Nickelback

Rock started losing its primacy on the charts in the ’80s, and these days, the Top 40 is almost exclusively the domain of pop and hip-hop acts — a state of affairs that has prompted a steady flow of “is rock dead?” editorials over the last couple of decades. Larry “Rhino” Reinhardt, former guitarist for rock legends Iron Butterfly, has passed away at the age of 63. According to his longtime girlfriend, Tracey Hooper, Reinhardt was taken off life support after a struggle with “sclerosis of the liver and complications from that,” due to the terms of his living will.
