UPDATE 2:55 PM: The deceased gunman has been identified as 34-year-old Aaron Alexis from Fort Worth, Texas. Alexis is believed to have gained access to the Navy Yard by using someone else’s ID card. Still no motive for the attack. Alexis was a full-time reservist from 2007-2011 working for the fleet logistics support squadron No. 46 in Fort Worth. He was a petty officer 3rd class.

UPDATE 12:15 PM: Officials have said that at least six people were killed and at least four have been wounded when at least one gunman opened fire inside a building at the Navy Yard in Washington DC.

Authorities say that one shooter has died and that police are looking for two other gunmen wearing military-style uniforms. The dead shooter has been identified as a Navy employee whose work status had changed earlier this year, suggesting that the motive may be job related.

CBS reports that witnesses say a gunman was firing down from the fourth floor of the building into the cafeteria on the first floor. Other witnesses say a gunman shot at them in a third floor hallway.

Original Report:

CBS Washington, DC is reporting at least ten people have been shot at the Washington Navy Yard this morning. The unidentified shooter is still on the loose at the Navy Yard.

A Washington, DC police officer is among the people shot. All victims are reportedly in critical condition.

The Navy has confirmed that shots were fired at 8:20 a.m. at the Naval Sea Systems Command Headquarters. The facility has about 3,000 employees. The Yard is on lock-down and a “shelter in place” order has been issued, according to Navy officials.

A suspect is being described as a black male dressed in all black carrying an assault rifle and a double-barreled shotgun.  The Navy Yard is approximately 5 miles northwest of the Naval Yard at the Naval Observatory grounds.

The 11th Street Bridge is closed in both directions. M Street is closed near New Jersey Avenue near 11th Street.

Naval Sea Systems Command is the largest of the Navy’s five system commands and accounts for a quarter of the Navy’s entire budget. It builds, buys and maintains the Navy’s ships and submarines and their combat systems.
