Eddie Murphy Named Academy Awards Host

Looks like the rumors were true — actor and comedian Eddie Murphy has been officially tapped to host the 84th annual Academy Awards. Although Murphy has hosted other awards shows, this will be his first gig at the Oscars.

“Eddie is a comedic genius, one of the greatest and most influential live performers ever,” said show co-producer Brett Ratner, who also directed Murphy in the upcoming comedy ‘Tower Heist,’ due for release November 4. “With his love of movies, history of crafting unforgettable characters and his iconic performances — especially on stage — I know he will bring excitement, spontaneity and tremendous heart to the show.”

Is Eddie Murphy In Talks to Host the Oscars?

Sources close to Academy Awards officials  say comedian and actor Eddie Murphy is being considered to host the Oscars in February.

The move is seen as an effort to return to basics — in other words, have one funny act head up the entire ceremony. In years past, the Academy has experimented with different hosting ideas, culminating in the somewhat questionable move this year that saw actors James Franco and Anne Hathaway emceeing what many called a disastrous show.

Lady Gaga Opens 2011 MTV VMAs as Drag Alter Ego, Jo Calderone [VIDEO]

As it turns out, the VMAs were opened by none other than her sideburned alter ego, Jo Calderone, who started things off by launching into a profane tirade about the end of his relationship with … Lady Gaga.

2011 MTV Video Music Awards Red Carpet

The stars turned out on the red carpet — or should we say black carpet? — for the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles. Celebs included Justin Bieber, who rocked a pair of scholarly specs, and Jessie J, who rocked a pair of bedazzled crutches and a cast (the singer sprained her foot at a recent live show).

Artist Coalition Calls for Grammy Boycott After Several Categories Given the Ax

If you’ve ever sat through an entire Grammy Awards show, the idea of having a few less categories might not strike you as such a bad idea — but for some of the artists affected by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences’ recent decision to whittle down the number of awards, it’s a potentially racist affront.

A group of musicians — including Paul Simon and jazz legend Herbie Hancock — has banded together to call for a boycott of CBS, which airs the awards ceremony, and is investigating a legal response to the Grammy cutbacks. As artist Bobby Sanabria put it in an interview with the AP, “We will ask people to stop watching CBS, boycott their sponsors and then write them. We’re at a critical juncture.”
