Last Wednesday, CCP unveiled a 16-foot tall monument in celebration of 11th anniversary of their galaxy-spanning MMO, EVE Online. Designed by artist Sigurður Guðmundsson, the “Worlds Within a World” monument resides in CCP’s home town of Reykjavik, Iceland, and is inscribed with the names of every active EVE player in the world. Mere days after its erection, however, CVG reports that it was vandalized with the logo of one of the game’s player factions.

A photo on the CCP forums shows the logo of Goonswarm, a well-known and reviled Eve faction, on the monument. There is some debate on the forums over whether the logo is permanently painted on the monument or if it’s just a sticker, but regardless, CCP isn’t taking the issue lightly. “CCP Falcon,” a CCP community manager, expressed his disapproval of the actions, as well as the company’ intention to fully investigate the act of vandalism on the EVE forums:

This is damage of public property in the City of Reykjavik. The police have been informed, and investigation is ongoing. This is not a laughing matter, and will be dealt with as a criminal offence. We are currently reviewing security footage from a number of surrounding buildings.

In an entirely separate incident, a Twitter user by the name of @The_Real_Gevlon claims to have defaced the name of a rival player, and posted a picture to back up his claim.

EVE Online is one of the most expansive and ambitious games ever made, but its player-base is seen by many as a den of griefers and thieves. Actions like these certainly don’t help that perception, but the unanimously critical reaction of the game’s overall community show that this is an example of a few bad apples spoiling the bunch.
