It’s been more than two years since Charla Nash was savagely attacked and mauled by a chimpanzee. Nash received terrible wounds at the hands of the 200-pound animal, which tore off her nose, eyelids and hands and she was forced to cover her face with a veil.

But Nash’s recovery took a groundbreaking turn when she received a full face transplant in May. Her new face was revealed for the first time on ‘Today’ this morning.

Nash’s brother and daughter told Ann Curry that she has a newfound sense of optimism since the transplant.

“It’s just good to see the rapid progress and the happiness that wasn’t there before. A new hope has been sparked and it’s just so nice to see her ready to get at it again,” said Nash’s daughter Briana.
