Clay’s Corner – Ready Or Not Here Comes Winter

Winter Weather After a long hot Summer, we were all ready for a change of weather here in Oklahoma. We got it. We have had several days of rain over the last couple of months and now Old Man Winter is about to come a calling. The following is a special weather statement form the National Weather Service issued on Saturday.

Accumulating snowfall possible Sunday night through Tuesday morning…

Following rainy weather today… colder air will filter into Oklahoma
and western North Texas tonight and Sunday. Meanwhile… another
storm system over the southwestern United States will begin to move
east. Snow may begin to fall across parts of southwestern Oklahoma
and western North Texas Sunday evening. Snow is expected to spread
from west to east across the region late Sunday night and Monday
morning.

At this time… the best opportunity for accumulating snowfall
appears to extend from near Hollis… Vernon and Wichita Falls areas
northeast toward Hobart… Lawton… Duncan… Oklahoma City… and
Stillwater. Widespread light accumulations less than two inches are
expected… and these accumulations would be mainly confined to
grassy surfaces… cars… and trees. Farther north accumulations are
expected to remain less than an inch on Monday with a rain snow mix
possible across far southern and southeast Oklahoma. Warm ground
temperatures will start the melting immediately after the snow ends
and expected sunshine on Tuesday will keep any accumulations
short-lived.

Residents and those traveling across Oklahoma and western North Texas should keep informed of the latest forecasts.

Now is a good time for all who travel during to the winter to prepare now. Check your vehicle to ensure that the tires are in good condition. Might not hurt to rotate them as well. Have your car or truck winterized. Checking the radiator now might save you a headache or two later on.

Ensure all of your lights are operational on the car. Carry extra bulbs with you. Might be time to change the wiper blades. With the super hot summer we had, they have probably cracked and may not function well. Keep the washer reservoir filled with washer fluid that will help melt ice accumulation. Keep an ice scraper in you car.

If you plan to travel long distance in winter, or commute a fair distance each day to work, you might want to have a few extra necessities with you. Extra clothing in case you get stuck and the clothes you have get wet. This way you can stay dry until you get moving again.

A bag of kitty litter. This will come in handy to give you some traction if you get stuck. Have a flashlight with extra batteries in the glove box. Blankets in case you are out for an extended period of time. Have some water available as well as some snacks.

Charged cell phone and ensure you have the car charger with you. If you do get stranded and you call for assistance, have patience. There may be several others in the same situation. Always plan ahead and check our stations website to see the latest weather and forecast.
