Mojang announced that console versions of Minecraft have surpassed the sales of PC and Mac versions, and that the game has sold 54 million copies across all platforms.

In a tweet from from Mojang analyst Patrick Geuder, he states, “Minecraft console editions together just passed Minecraft for PC/Mac. And across all platforms we've sold almost 54 million copies.” The Xbox 360 version of Minecraft launched in May of 2012 while the PS3 version was released 19 months later in December 2013. PC versions of Minecraft have existed since 2009, with the final version released in November, 2011.

Sales of Minecraft on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 have helped the game become one of the top-selling pieces of entertainment software in history. With 54 million copies sold across all platforms, Minecraft is the third highest selling game ever, behind only Tetris and Wii Sports, both of which were bundled with hardware. This puts Minecraft well ahead of landmark titles like Super Mario Bros, Mario Kart Wii and Grand Theft Auto V.

Minecraft has gone from a quirky indie experiment to a worldwide marketing sensation. While the game built a fan-base on the superior PC version, Minecraft’s presence on consoles is what introduced it to the larger gaming community, and made it the phenomenon it is today. With scheduled releases on the PS4, Xbox One and Vita, we can expect Minecraft to continue selling like crazy, and possibly even move to the second spot on the all-time chart.
