Nirvana are most famously known as a three-piece act, but the seminal grunge band cranked up the volume by welcoming Germs / Adolescents guitarist Pat Smear into the band. Smear performed with Nirvana during the 'In Utero' tour up until frontman Kurt Cobain's death in 1994, but although Smear got the gig, he wasn't the only musician Nirvana were considering.

Kurt Cobain was famously a punk rock fanatic. Inspired heavily by bands such as the Germs and the Adolescents, Cobain twisted the classic punk sound into a darker and more bleak form, which many music fans know as grunge. Now a member of Foo Fighters, Pat Smear beefed up Nirvana's live performances by adding a second guitar to the mix, but in a recent interview with Mojo Magazine, Nirvana drummer and Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl revealed the names of other guitarists that Nirvana also thought about recruiting.

Grohl shares:

What Pat added more than anything was an injection of life and happiness to those last months of Nirvana. We’d talked about getting a second guitar player: we talked about Steve Turner, we talked about Buzz Osbourne, but of course we didn’t want to break up Mudhoney or the Melvins. Kurt had been in Los Angeles and walked into the SST Superstore where Pat was working, and they hit it off. One of the first rehearsals, we were trying to figure out The Man Who Sold The World and the three of us just couldn’t do it. Pat said, "Actually, it goes like this." I thought: 'There’s a musician in the band now!’ Having Pat changed things dramatically. Kurt and Courtney were on that side of town and Krist and I were on this side of town, and Pat definitely bridged us back together for awhile.

Surviving Nirvana members Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear recently participated in one of the most incredible experiments in recent rock history, teaming up with Paul McCartney to write the original song 'Cut Me Some Slack' and to perform together during a number of special gigs.
