Evanescence Singer Amy Lee Mum on Lawsuit, Turns Attention to Film Scoring
Evanscence have been on an extended break, and recent news broke that frontwoman Amy Lee is suing her longtime record label for more than $1 million. But that doesn’t mean Lee is not making any new music these days. The singer tells MTV that she’s currently working on a film score for an upcoming movie.
As for the lawsuit, Lee tells MTV, “I can’t say a word, I’m sorry. It’s really for the best right now.” While it isn’t much, her comments do mark her first public acknowledgment that she is embroiled in some legal action with Wind-up Records.
When it comes to new music, Lee recently teamed with composer Dave Eggar to create the music for the film ‘War Story,’ which will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival later this month. She also added that the music may not be what fans would expect from her.
“It’s going to surprise my fans. It’s not what you’d expect; the film is very dark, very introspective. There’s not even a lot of dialogue, which is great, because to me it makes this beautiful, sad platform for music,” Lee explained. “There’s a lot of blending of sounds, a lot of ominous tones. I play a lot of keyboard, and a lot of Taurus pedal. There’s a lot of low drones.”
The vocalist adds that there are moments of playing and it is musical, but there are also moments of “walls of sounds, out of blaring cellos and trombones and synthesizers and harp, all on top of each other … [We're] sort of creating new songs. It’s not, like, a soundtrack. It’s an atmosphere.”
Lee reveals that she wrote one new song for the film called ‘Push the Button,’ but says it’s different than her past material. She explained, “It’s very different for me, it’s electronic; I did it all myself, which was crazy, because I’m used to engineering and writing and mixing demos in my house, but being responsible for that being the end product was a new challenge for me. It was like ‘This is it, I’m mixing this.’”
Lee, who admitted wanting to score a film for some time, says she’s also interested in doing more scoring if the opportunity arises.
