FX ‘Fargo’ TV Series Adds ‘Breaking Bad”s Bob Odenkirk, ‘Always Sunny”s Glenn Howerton and More
Like ‘Fargo‘ herself, casting for FX’s forthcoming adaptation of the 1996 Coen brothers classic has been a bit slow-moving, at least until today. The cable network opened the floodgates on its ‘Fargo’ TV series, revealing new parts to play from ‘Breaking Bad‘ and ‘Better Call Saul‘ star Bob Odenkirk, ‘Private Practice”s Kate Walsh, ‘Always Sunny”s Glenn Howerton, Adam Goldberg and more!
Starring in an all-new take on the Minnesota crime drama’s tone from writer Noah Hawley, FX’s 10-episode ‘Fargo’ series will feature Odenkirk in the role of Deputy Bill Olson, a Bemidji deputy with seniority over his younger, smarter and more ambitious fellow deputy, Molly Solverson, as played by Allison Tolman. ‘The Big C‘ star Oliver Platt will play Stavros Milos, Supermarket King of Minnesota, while Walsh will take the role of Gina Hess, a former stripper and mother to twin teenage boys.
Supplementing his recent ‘Always Sunny’ branchout on ‘The Mindy Project,’ Glenn Howerton will play ambitious personal trainer Don Chumph. All told, FX’s impressive list of supporting talent for ‘Fargo’ reads thusly:
Joey King (The Conjuring, Oz: The Great and Powerful) will play Gus’s daughter, “Greta Grimly” and Peter Breitmayer (The Middle, A Serious Man) will play “Lieutenant Schmidt,” Gus’s superior officer. Tom Musgrave (Beethoven’s 5th) will portray “Bo Munk,” Lester’s boss at the Bo Munk Insurance Shop, and Josh Close (The Master) will play “Ron Nygaard,” Lester’s younger and more successful brother.
Russell Harvard (There Will Be Blood) and Adam Goldberg (The Unusuals) will play members of the Fargo Crime Syndicate, “Mr. Wrench” and “Mr. Numbers,” respectively – Mr. Wrench is the muscle. Mr. Numbers is the mouth.
Elsewhere, FX’s as-yet unscheduled series stars Billy Bob Thornton in the role of mysterious con man Lorne Malvo, along with ‘Sherlock”s Martin Freeman as the henpecked salesman type that previously seemed in line with William H. Macy’s role of the film. Additionally, Colin Hanks will portray Duluth Police Deputy Gus Grimly, a single father who finds himself faced with a choice between his own personal safety and his police duties as he comes face to face with a killer.
For those unaware, the original ‘Fargo’ told the story of pregnant police chief Marge Gunderson, tasked with traversing the snow-filled landscapes of Minnesota to solve a series of murders linked to the dirty dealings of an inept car salesman (Macy), as things slowly spiraled out of control. The film also featured ‘Boardwalk Empire”s Steve Buscemi, while McDormand won the Oscar for Best Actress, as did Joel and Ethan Coen for original screenplay.
