Much like last week’s ‘Justified‘ season 5 finale, a number of eyes will be on FX tonight for the Coen brothers-adapted premiere of ‘Fargo,’ so what better time to preview some summer wares? The first teaser-trailer for FX’s ‘Homeland‘-produced Middle Eastern drama ‘Tyrant‘ has arrived, but what does the cryptic desert promo reveal about the buzzworthy new drama?
Developed by ‘Homeland’ producers Howard Gordon and Gideon Raff (note the similar logo font), along with ‘LOST’ writer Craig Wright, ‘Tyrant’ centers on Bassam “Barry” Al Fayeed (Adam Rayner), son of the dictator of a war-torn Middle Eastern country who returns from a self-imposed 20 year exile with his American wife and children, and gets caught up past conflicts once again. ‘Life of Pi‘ director Ang Lee had originally signed on to helm the pilot episode but was later replaced by ‘Harry Potter‘ franchise vet David Yates.
The first promo doesn’t reveal very much beyond a desert backdrop, but here’s what FX president John Landgraf had to say of the drama, which premieres this summer:
With Tyrant, Howard Gordon, Gideon Raff and Craig Wright have produced a beautiful television pilot that will be a groundbreaking television series. Tyrant introduces characters and a world that have never been explored in a dramatic television series format. There is a reason a bidding war broke out over this project: it grabs you as all great epics do and simply refuses to let go!
‘Weeds‘ star Justin Kirk will play mysterious American diplomat John Tucker, while former ‘Mob Doctor’ Jordana Spiro will take the role of Dana, wife to Kirk’s Tucker, and who also works at the American Embassy as a cultural attaché. Also among the cast are Jennifer Finnigan, Ashraf Barhom, Moran Atias, Noah Silver, Anne Winters, Fares Fares, Salim Daw, Mehdi Dehbi, and Alice Krige.
Feast your eyes on the intriguing, if cryptic first trailer for FX’s ‘Tyrant’ above, and tell us if you’ll tune in for the new Middle Eastern drama this summer!
