Former My Chemical Romance singer Gerard Way has released another new song, “Getting Down the Germs.” A lyric video has also been unveiled, taking a microscopic look at Way’s newest muse.

Along with “Baby You’re a Haunted House,” “Getting Down the Germs” is the first new music from Way since 2016 and was actually co-written by My Chem bandmate Ray Toro. The ex-MCR frontman released his debut solo album, Hesitant Alien, back in 2014, so we may be getting a new full-length from the musician in 2019.

“Getting Down the Germs” is a stripped-down, feel-good song reminiscent of ’60s psychedelic music and new school indie rock. The multiple flute solos really bring you back to rock’s golden age, without feeling like Way dusted off an old formula.

“I had really been wanting a song that featured the flute prominently for quite some time. It sits in there perfectly, like it was made to pay the song a visit,” Way says about “Getting Down the Germs.” “The whole song reminds me of wiggling squiggling wormy germs. It’s a very calm affair that shows a peek into where I may be heading musically. I hope you enjoy it. It was fun to make.”
