Two new live action trailers for Halo 5: Guardians tell two distinctly different Master Chief stories in similar ways. Why is Chief looking like the bad guy? We'll just have to find out this October.

Airing during last night's season finale of AMC's The Walking Dead, these two live action Halo 5: Guardians trailers showcase an epic showdown between gaming's two biggest Spartans (sorry Kratos, you don't count). The Xbox Wire reports that we're in for some heavy action between the world-saving and Forerunner-stopping Master Chief and the UNSC's best agent, Spartan Locke. Halo: Nightfall already told us the backstory of who Locke is and why he's important to the franchise. This time, we'll get to see him take on the legendary savior. Our big question is, why is Master Chief being made to look like the bad guy? Did he lead the Forerunner army to Earth? Did the Didact's (who was awakened by Chief) digital consciousness hack into everything and cause chaos for Earth's special forces? We should note that the trailer does show the Master Chief statue in two different ways. In the one with Chief standing, the statue is dirty and rough. The trailer with Locke standing has the Chief statue looking a lot more polished, hinting that the agent perhaps held the famous warrior in high regards.

“We wanted Halo 5: Guardians to be the game that pays off the epic promise of the Halo universe in scope and scale and drama,” said Bonnie Ross, Head of 343 Industries. “We want to amaze players with the sheer size of the worlds and battles they’ll experience, even as they question everything they thought they knew about its heroes, marvels and mysteries. #HunttheTruth is only the beginning and we can’t wait to debut the game to Xbox fans around the world at E3 this June.”

Halo 5: Guardians will launch exclusively for the Xbox One on Oct. 27 (just in time for the return of The Walking Dead).
