When it comes to carving pumpkins, we've gone from simple shapes and rudimentary mouths to truly carved gourds in just a decade or two. Granted, you can give credit to The Food Network and their holiday programming, with challenging carving contests to boot.

Now carving isn't easy, but it's not hard either. You just have to have a feel for how deeply you cut your pumpkins. Too shallow and candlelight won't come through, too deep and you're just wasting peoples time.

The best advice I've received is this:

  • Start small, with small pumpkins, and work your way into the big ones.
  • Everything is a tool for carving pumpkins. If it works for what you need to do, it's a tool.
  • If you mess up, turn it around. You can carve both sides.

Take if from PumkinGutter himself... Anyone can do it, you just have to try.
