In This Moment’s ‘Blood’ Album + Single Receive Gold Certification in United States
While the collapse of album sales has coincided with fewer Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certifications for rock and metal albums, there’s certainly been an uptick recently. With new metrics in place to adapt to the new climate of music consumption in a streaming-dominant world, In This Moment‘s 2012 album Blood and its title track have become the latest to be certified Gold in the United States.
The RIAA website indicates that the “Blood” single was the first to receive this honor, being certified on March 10 earlier this year, exceeding 500,000 units moved in the digital format. A change in the measurement metrics were made for singles back in 2013, allowing 100 on-demand streams to count as a single download in helping reach the certification benchmarks. That number has since been moved to 150 on-demand streams as the popularity of streaming continues to rise.
It didn’t take long for Blood, the album, to follow suit as it was certified Gold on May 10. This is the category where rock and metal bands have been benefitting from the most as on-demand audio and video streams as well as track sale equivalents now count towards the overall units moved. Since February of 2016, the RIAA now recognizes 1,500 streams as a single album unit and all of this is in addition to physical copies sold.
In This Moment will release Ritual, their sixth full length album, on July 21 through Atlantic Records in partnership with Roadrunner Records. The first single, “Oh Lord” has already been released to whet fans’ appetite for the first new material from the band since 2014’s Black Widow.
Catch the group on the road starting June 19 as they embark on a lengthy headlining tour with Motionless in White, Vimic (Joey Jordison‘s new band) and Little Miss Nasty. The run will conclude on Aug. 5 and to see if the tour is coming to a city near you, check our 2017 Guide to Rock + Metal Tours.
