There’s tragic news to report as William Tolley, drummer for the Long Island death metal band Internal Bleeding, died in a fall while at his day job as a firefighter on a call in Queens, New York. Tolley can be seen at the far right in the photo above.

According to the New York Daily News, witnesses stated that it appeared as though Tolley took a misstep while moving between the roof and the bucket at the end of the five-story ladder and fell to his death. He was 42.

“It was a routine operation, and somehow he fell from the roof,” said FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro at a grim hospital news conference. “It is a terrible tragedy for a department that has known more than its share of tragedy.” In a social media posting, New York City mayor Bill DiBlasio stated, “I’m very sorry to report tragedy has struck our city. Today we lost a hero of the New York City Fire Department (FDNY). William Tolley was a 14-year veteran of the FDNY dedicated to protecting others. To William’s family, we not only stand by you today but in the weeks and years ahead. Our hearts also go out today to the members of the FDNY, especially the members of Ladder 135 in Ridgewood.”

As stated, Tolley was also a longtime drummer with the band Internal Bleeding. The grop formed in 1991, releasing their debut album Voracious Contempt in 1995. Tolley took up drums at the age of eight. He stated in a 2013 interview, “When I am not drumming, I work at the Fire Department. When I am not working, I also watch my 4-year-old. I am a family guy. I love spending time with my wife and daughter, doing all sort of fun stuff together.”

The members of Internal Bleeding also posted the news to social media with the statement, “Our drummer, the heartbeat of the band, William Tolley died today. There are ZERO WORDS to describe the loss. He was a good, decent and honorable man who loved his friends, his family and the people he served. There will never be another like him. There are no words to describe the utter sadness and despair we feel right now. We love you Bill.”

Our condolences to the family of William Tolley and the band and NYFD’s extended family.
