Iowa Wrestler Throws Second-Place Big Ten Medal in Garbage
In Iowa, the only thing more popular than wrestling is corn, mainly because you can’t legally eat a boiled wrestler with butter on him. The winner of 23 NCAA national championships since 1975, the University of Iowa excels at wrestling. Its wrestlers expect to win at the Big 10 wrestling championships, dammit!
Well, Iowa senior Matt McDonough did not win. He finished second in the 125-pound class at the Big 10 tournament in Champaign, Illinois last weekend, losing in the finals to Illinois’ Jesse Delgado. Disappointed with the loss, McDonough threw his second-place medal in the garbage, according to a wrestling reporter for The Daily Iowan.

Well, as noted philosopher Tom Skerritt once said: “There are no points for second place.” But, there are nice medals awarded. With a tradition like Iowa’s, the pressure to win is pretty intense. It’s probably for the best that someone retrieved the medal for McDonough.
Perhaps at some point he’ll acknowledge that he earned that medal, even though Delgado was a little better than him last weekend.
