Last night the Disney channel debuted a new sneak peek of their upcoming villain origin film 'Maleficent' during the premiere of the TV movie 'Cloud 9.' We're not entire sure what the difference is between a "sneak peek" and a trailer, but we do love the charming intro, featuring footage from the original animated 'Sleeping Beauty' film, which transitions beautifully into the live-action world of 'Maleficent' and Angelina Jolie's villainess.

While the story looks intriguing, the actual visuals are still giving us some serious 'Alice' flashbacks. Hopefully Jolie's charisma is enough.

In the film, Jolie plays the classic Disney villain and the story is told more from her perspective than that of 'Sleeping Beauty' protagonist Aurora, played by Elle Fanning. The film also stars Sharlto Copley, and since the film is told from Maleficent's perspective and he plays the King, that would make him -- wait for it -- the villain, continuing his streak of playing bad guy roles as of late. More importantly, we can't wait to hear what horrible accent he's using in this film.

The official synopsis:

A beautiful, pure-hearted young woman, Maleficent has an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom, until one day when an invading army threatens the harmony of the land. Maleficent rises to be the land’s fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal — an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone. Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces an epic battle with the invading king’s successor and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Maleficent realizes that Aurora holds the key to peace in the kingdom — and perhaps to Maleficent’s true happiness as well.

'Maleficent' also stars Juno Temple, Sam Riley, and Imelda Staunton, and hits theaters in 3D and good ol' 2D on May 30.
