Marvel TV series are rapidly spreading beyond their ABC and Netflix homes, between FOX, Freeform and more, so might HBO be next? Jessica Jones co-creator Brian Michael Bendis seems to have confirmed as much, developing Marvel Icon imprint Scarlet for a live-action series with the prestige cabler.

Bendis confirmed what little he could from the ATX Television Festival in Austin, most specifically that the 2010 series co-created with artist Alex Maleev was in early talks for HBO development, as well that a team would be announced when plans solidified.

I do a book called Scarlet which is soon to be announced also in our universe of television. Not announced yet, but HBO.

UPDATE - Despite Bendis’ words, sources confirm the project would go to Cinemax, not HBO.

For those unaware, the fourth-wall breaking series follows Portland resident Scarlet Rue as she “rebels against a corrupt society and ends up starting a new American revolution in the process.” HBO reps have denied knowledge of any adaptation project, at least for the moment.

Certainly HBO could benefit from an infusion of comic audiences, but might Bendis’ Scarlet be the way to go?
