Metallica took their Record Store Day Ambassador duties to heart, staging an in-store performance at Rasputin Music in Berkeley, Calif. Saturday afternoon (April 16). Given that the band just released deluxe edition remastered box sets for Kill 'Em All and Ride the Lightning, their performance was built around songs from both discs.

Though teased for "around 4PM PT," the show started about a half hour later, with the live stream at the band's Facebook page kicking in as the guys were performing the classic "The Four Horsemen" from their Kill 'Em All album. Before continuing, James Hetfield went on to thank Rasputin Music for hosting the event, spoke about the group's love for record stores and added, "I'm really glad that there's places like this still around and still alive, so keep supporting."

Picking and choosing between discs, the band then continued with Ride the Lightning's title track and "Fade to Black." During the latter performance, Hetfield repeatedly shouted, "Hey, do you hear us Cliff," a reference to late bassist Cliff Burton.

The show provided a looser atmosphere for the band, with the group members speaking with those in the crowd and throwing some impromptu riffs in between songs. After "Fade to Black," Hetfield asked the crowd, "Was that in tune?," then teasing, "You wanted old school."

Continuing the set, the band rocked out "Jump in the Fire," with Hetfield joking after that it was "now" getting heavy. "For Whom the Bell Tolls" rocked the room, while audience members sang along to "Creeping Death." Finishing out their set, the band concluded with a spirited version of "Metal Militia."

As they came out to take a bow and once again drive home the point of passing on the record store experience to the next generation, the band also pointed out some of the special people in attendance, singling out family members, Faith No More's Mike Bordin and Jonny and Marsha Zazula who signed Metallica at the very start of their career.
