Nonpoint’s Elias Soriano Discusses ‘The Return’ Album, New Guitarist BC Kochmit + More

Nonpoint are riding a high at the moment as the band is promoting their latest album, 'The Return.' Frontman Elias Soriano recently had a chance to talk with 'Loudwire Nights' host Full Metal Jackie about 'The Return' album. Their chat can be read below.

We've got Elias Soriano from Nonpoint with us on the show. What made the last album such an important musical step toward making 'The Return'?

This record, I think more so than all the other ones just because of where it sits in our timeline, has a lot to say about our band. We were looking to put out a record that people we're going to be able to listen to this deep into our career and say, "Wow, these guys are still putting out great music and a great show." I think we accomplished that.

Metal as a genre has changed so much since the first Nonpoint album was released. Creatively, what were you able to do with 'The Return' that wouldn't have been possible back then?

I think more so just our basic groove is pretty much the same. There's a depth, a bounce and a rhythm to our band that we like to push out front. Luckily for us, bands as of late really haven't been putting a lot of energy into their live show, so the 'stand around watching' bands really aren't surviving when it comes to ticket sales and watching fan reaction. We're the type of band that gives 110 percent and puts all of our efforts and pride into our live show. I think that's what survived us the most.

Musically, what impressed you most about [new guitarist] BC [Kochmit] and how has that made Nonpoint stronger as a band?

Just his overall ability to be a complete three sixty band member. The most important thing, of course, his chops. The guy is one of the most efficient guitar players in our genre right now. You don't replace Clint Lowery of Sevendust for a couple of weeks on a tour because you suck. He's a great guitar player, an amazing songwriter. He helped us write one of the songs on the self-titled record, 'Pandora's Box,' and to have him in the band after talking to him for the last eight years is exciting. Then his ability to program websites and a design prowess and his ability to whip up a t-shirt into having knowledge about social media that none of us have. I don't even have, Rob doesn't even have after doing this for 16 years. BC is definitely made to be in this band.

This time making the new album, 'The Return,' what made the recording experience unlike that of any other Nonpoint album?

This time we were more prepared going into the studio. Knowing that we had given ourselves a deadline. Recording isn't cheap and we like to record our records in places that at the end of the day, when people buy that song or buy that record they feel good about it because it sounds equal to what they like to hear live from us. We spend a lot of time on our live tone, so, when we walk into the studio we wanted to spend most of our time getting tones and spending it on the mix. We walked in knowing that we wanted to spend 3-4 days on the drums and just a few days on the bass. About a week on the guitars and the same on the vocals. So, when we found ourselves in week three, we were done tracking this record and were moving into mix because that's just the way we like to do our records.
