Oklahoma Speaker of the House T.W Shannon, will deliver the commencement address for the Cameron University 2013 graduates on May 10 at 7:30 p.m., at Cameron Stadium.

Shannon is also a graduate from Cameron University. He graduated in the year 2000 when he received a Bachelors in Communication. He would then go on to earn his juris doctorate from Oklahoma City Law School.

According to the Press Release provided by Cameron University, Shannon’s political career began when he worked as a field representative for former Congressman J.C. Watts and then for Congressman Tom Cole. In 2006, he was elected to the Oklahoma House of Representatives, the first Republican ever elected from District 62 and the first African-American elected to the legislature from southern Oklahoma.

Shannon took the oath of office to be Oklahoma’s Speaker of the House, where he became Oklahoma’s first African-American Speaker of the House and the youngest house member to hold that position.

The graduation ceremony is open to the public with a fireworks display to follow.
