Actually, Ozzy’s official name as a member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire would be Sir John Michael Osbourne, MBE. Has a nice ring to it, right? A heavy metal super fan named Helen Maidiotis thinks so, which is why she has launched a petition to have Ozzy Osbourne knighted by the Queen of England.
The petition was actually launched in 2012, but Maidiotis’ cause has just began to receive a great deal of attention. Kelly Osbourne, one of Ozzy’s daughters has even given the petition her blessing, claiming that “this really needs to happen.”
According to a report by the Birmingham Mail, Maidiotis’ cause has reached Buckingham Palace! “Our campaign has reached Buckingham Palace,” claims Maidiotis, “as a friend of mine had sent off letters explaining about our battle for Ozzy’s knighthood – and they have replied positively.”
Maidiotis continues, “As Black Sabbath are set to perform at Hyde Park, London, on July 4, it would be a fitting tribute to Ozzy if we were to reach our target in the days following their performance. I have fought long and hard for this along with my followers on The Knighthood Of Ozz Facebook page, and though, at times, I feel like we are not getting anywhere, I am not one for giving up. I intend to see this right through to the end, whatever the outcome.”
The campaign’s head originally aimed to get Sabbath legends Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward knighted as well, but according to Maidiotis, “David Spooner (who is in charge of honors in the UK) said that it is highly unlikely the whole band would get a knighthood and that I would have a better chance with a single member of the band. So I chose Ozzy Osbourne as he is the voice of Sabbath.”
The ‘Knight Ozzy Osbourne’ petition aims to acquire 5,000 signatures, and it’s very near that figure at the time of this posting. Let’s help push this thing past the 5K mark! To sign the petition, click here.
Update: Thanks to the press this petition has received the last couple days, it now has more than 6,000 signatures.
