Opening a Can of Coke on the Ocean Floor

Astronaut Chris Hadfield, known best for his hijinks on the International Space Station, has found himself at the bottom of the ocean... Let's spread a little science!

In case you missed it, let's break it down.

First, he shakes a can of pop... then he opens the can of pop... Normally, it would be gushing and spewing all over the place! But due to the enormous pressures these guys are living in on the bottom of the ocean, there's enough atmospheric pressure around them to keep the soda contained.

ei - you can't build up enough pressure in the can to overcome the atmosphere outside the can.

At that depth, it's basically like having vacuum packed soda.
