Over the holidays, Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder helped a family in need. After reading Tyshika Britten and her kids were facing eviction and couldn’t afford Christmas gifts this year, Vedder gave $10,000 to the Maryland family.

In a desperate plea for help, Tyshika took to Craigslist shortly before Christmas. “I am a mother of six, 5 boys and 1 baby girl,” she began. “I’m so hurt. I’m trying my best. I pray everyday and now I’m begging for help. I know it's not about the gifts, but they are kids! I’m such a failure right now . . . please help me.”

After the family’s story was picked up by The Washington Post, generous people from around the country sent massive amounts of gifts to the Britten family. Vedder and his $10,000 check was just one of many acts of kindness. “I was just so moved by the story and what this mother did for her children,” Vedder said. “I thought those kids must be so proud of their mother for reaching out. That takes a lot of courage.”

Vedder even saw a bit of his own childhood in the Britton’s story. “There were years there were toys from Santa, but they were used and they came from garage sales and they didn’t always work,” he said.

A GoFundMe campaign was even launched for the Britton family, raising another $18,475. Pearl Jam will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame alongside acts like Yes, Journey and Tupac Shakur.
