In our latest series of videos with tattoo legend Paul Booth, the artist recalls tattooing both Max and Igor Cavalera of Sepultura. Booth discusses committing gargoyles, tribal pieces and eyes inspired by A Clockwork Orange on the Brazilian thrashers.

Without Igor Cavalera, metalheads may not be as familiar with Paul Booth’s work. Booth credits Igor for bringing him into the metal realm, becoming the first rock star to go under Paul’s needle.

“I was at a convention in ’92 in San Diego and Igor Cavalera came up to me and tells me he’s a fan and wants to get tattooed. I’m like, ‘You’re Sepultura. What do you mean you’re a fan? I’m the fan here.’ After that, for a couple of years, he’d invite me out to their place in Arizona and I’d tattoo everybody.”

Max Cavalera soon became a constant canvas for Paul Booth’s work, getting two eyes in his elbow ditches, inspired by the “film screening” scene in A Clockwork Orange. Booth also inked Max’s neck with tribal roots and the frontman’s chest with a gargoyle, meant as a protector for the Cavalera family.

“Those demonic images are not always as demonic for everyone. Sometimes they’re positive, it depends how you look at it,” Booth explains.
