This past week, forty-six years ago, Sigma Tau Gamma began calling Cameron University home. This past weekend was one of treasured memories for the Gamma Rho Chapter of Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity because they also held their annual White Rose Banquet at Cameron University. The Gamma Rho brothers, members from their sister sorority Alpha Phi, as well as legendary Alumni from years past were all in attendance.

It was two years ago, through an unimaginable tragedy, that I became privy to just how extraordinary these guys were. Marshall & Philip Cabe, Cameron Graduates and members of Sigma Tau Gamma, passed away unexpectedly in a tragic accident. I was moved by the way their Sig Tau Brothers, this Fraternity of courageous and noble gentlemen; although grieving, found a way to unite not only the university, but this entire community in honor of their lost brothers.

Ever since then, I’ve witnessed firsthand the remarkable acts of kindness, community organizing and charitable endeavors that are regular occurrences with this fraternity. The considerable amount of work they do for The Special Olympics, The Hungry Hearts Feeding Ministry and The C. Carter Crane Homeless Shelter is immeasurable.

It was great to see the brotherhood in high spirits during their annual White Rose Banquet. There were several awards given throughout the night to honor various members for their achievements. They also had a “roast” to honor certain members for hilarious categories like:  Most likely to impersonate his mother and run a hotel (i.e. Norman Bates). Most likely to order a venti mocha frappe with extra whip cream on top (i.e The typical millennial). And; The American Ambassador of Wakanda (i.e. The future politician).

The “National White Rose Sweetheart” is the Fraternity’s guest at the summer national meeting of Sigma Tau Gamma, and is recognized at the annual Awards Banquet.

They are crowned at the ceremony and serve as the chapter’s official hostess throughout the year. This year, they chose Laura Bettis as their annual White Rose Sweetheart. Her husband Bert Bettis attended the ceremony and gave a $500 donation to the Sigma Tau Gamma Foundation. I had the honor of being a special invited guest at this year’s ceremony as well. It was a night to remember.

Congratulations to the courageous and noble gentlemen of Sigma Tau Gamma for all the great work they do at Cameron University and within the community.
