With what seems to be a million ALS Ice Water Challenge videos on Facebook these days, one lone stoner breaks the mold with his Ice Bong Challenge

Looking around the web, it makes you wonder if anyone knows what ALS actually is, and if people actually know what the challenge is all about. Sure, it's a fun way to spread word about the ALS Association, but I think the rhetoric is getting lost in the 'fun' of completing the challenge.

ALS is Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, or Lou Gerhig's Disease. It affects a persons neurological system, specifically the motor-neurons of a persons body. These neurons are the wiring between your brain and your muscles. Over time, these damaged neurons aren't able to convey the impulses your brain sends out, and it can leave a perfectly healthy person paralyzed.

With most neurological issues we face as a species, the science is relatively young, and that's why they need to raise money. Grants can only get the research funded for so long, whereas donations can further the science until a cure is found.

Take Charlie Sheen for instance. That dude is a giant crap-sack full of crazy cocktails, but he seems to get the point of the ALS Challenge. Instead of making a goofy video of him getting ice cold water dumped on him, he come out of left-field with a $10,000 donation.

If you can, be like Charlie Sheen. Before you pop off into "It's Popular" land, educate yourself and do what you feel is right.
