While the temps have been almost unbearably cold, there's always something to get you out the house in Southwest Oklahoma. Take the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge for instance, it's absolutely beautiful this time of year.

It's true that the rangers close parts of the preserve from time to time, mainly due to weather, but there's so much more to our little slice of awesomeness.

For starters, there are tons of hiking trails in and around the refuge. You'll find most of the spectacular walks are outside the gates. There are a ton of maps and trails on the web, find a new one and handle it.

Personally, I like hitting the lakes on and around the refuge. Jed Johnson, Crater Lake, Quannah Parker, ect... My favorite being Rush Lake. I'll take just about any excuse to throw a lure across the water. Today, Rush just happened to be completely frozen. The entire lake, solid ice.

With the beautiful weekend of weather coming up, go ahead and get out of your comfort zone a little bit. Get out of the house. Take the kids out to the refuge. The headquarters there is a great place for kids and big kids like us. A short movie, a lot of things to see, hear, touch, and enjoy. Start your trip here.
