Whether you like glazed, Boston cream, jelly-filled or powdered, today is a great day to be an American.

That's right - it's National Doughnut Day.

The holiday, which is held on the first Friday of June each year, got its start in 1938 as part of an effort by the Salvation Army to pay tribute to women who handed out doughnuts to soldiers during World War One.

If you're looking to do your part to honor this most holy - or should we say hole-y - of days, you can go to Krispy Kreme for a free doughnut. Dunkin' Donuts will also hand out free doughnuts to any customer who buys a drink, pitting these two rivals against each other on a grand stage.

The Salvation Army is even sharing its doughnut recipe in case you'd like to whip up your own homemade sugar rush.

So, make sure you leave room for dessert and enjoy a doughnut or two today. Actually, just skip dessert and make the doughnuts your meal. It'll be your way of being a good American.

What flavor is your favorite donut ?

In the meantime, enjoy the impact doughnuts have had on our culture in these videos.
