Tuesday night, one Lawton Public School educator reigned above all the rest, as Charles Kirchen was named the district teacher of the year. Kirchen, a social studies teacher at Eisenhower High, currently teaches advanced placement and regular world history.

Kirchen says he was surprised by Tuesday night’s award, awarded at a ceremony held at Central Middle School, and says he's doing what he loves. The honor is accompanied by prizes, that include the use of a car for the next year. He will now be in the running for state teacher of the year.

The rookie teacher of the year award was also awarded Tuesday night. That award went to Crosby Park Elementary second grade teacher Halley Ellis. During the event, teachers, staff and community partners who go above and beyond the call of duty, including 10 Lawton Public Schools Champions for Children, three LPS Friends of Education and the remaining finalists for teacher and rookie teacher of the year were recognized for their contributions to the success of the district.
