Michigan point guard Trey Burke added another individual award to his resume this weekend when he was named the John R. Wooden Award winner, edging out Indiana’s Victor Oladipo and Creighton’s Doug McDermott. On Thursday, Burke was chosen The Associated Press’ college basketball player of the year. He topped Otto Porter Jr. of Georgetown and Oladipo in the AP voting.

A sophomore who helped lead the Wolverines back to the Final Four for the first time in 20 years, Burke averaged 19.2 points, 3.1 rebounds and 6.7 assists this season. Cazzie Russell (1966) was the only other Michigan player to win the AP award. The Wooden Award, named after legendary UCLA coach John Wooden, has only been given since 1977.

Although the voting for each award was completed well before Burke buried a clutch three-point shot to take Kansas to overtime in the Mar. 29 South Regional semifinal in which Michigan prevailed, the playmaker has been a consistent performer and leader for head coach John Beilein all season long.

“The whole year he has been just as calm and cool as if he were a fifth-year redshirt senior guard,” Michigan coach John Beilein said of Burke. “He’s [played] with three to five freshmen all year long. Here he is, the cagey, veteran sophomore.”

Burke and Michigan head into Monday’s national championship game against Louisville in hopes of getting the school its first national title in basketball since 1989.
