Watch U2 Help Jimmy Fallon Kick Off His New Late-Night Gig

More than a quarter century after U2 shut down a Los Angeles block, and pissed off some local authorities, by performing an impromptu video shoot on the roof of a liquor store, the band returned to a big-city rooftop yesterday for another video. But this one didn’t seem to anger too many people — unless you don’t like U2.

The group was in New York City yesterday to help Jimmy Fallon kick off his first appearance as the new host of ‘The Tonight Show.’ With a marching band backing them as a beautiful sunset loomed in the distance, U2 tore through ‘Invisible,’ the first taste of their upcoming album.

And it’s a way better performance than the song’s official video that was released last week. You can watch it above.

U2 also played an acoustic version of ‘Ordinary Love’ with Fallon’s house band the Roots later in the show. Next up for U2 is a performance of ‘Ordinary Love’ at the Oscars on March 2. The song, which comes from the movie ‘Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom,’ is nominated for an award.

Their next album, their 13th, is due sometime this year, with a summer release looking to be a safe bet. Danger Mouse produced the record, the band’s first since 2009′s ‘No Line on the Horizon.’

Fallon took over the venerable ‘Tonight Show’ from Jay Leno with an all-star lineup of guests. U2 were the first musical act to perform. And while their performance wasn’t nearly as great as Fallon’s ‘Last Waltz’-inspired farewell from his previous gig, it was an epic start to his new job. Then again, it will hard to beat this:
