Vampire Weekend Debut New Song in Cleveland
Two weeks ago we learned that Vampire Weekend were “80 percent” done with their first album since 2010′s ‘Contra.’ On Thursday (July 12), the band felt comfortable enough with one of them to give the song its debut at the House of Blues in Cleveland, Ohio.
We don’t have the entire song, which does not have a title. We’re guessing the fan in attendance realized it was a new composition and whipped out his phone to be the first to capture it. However, it features their trademark jittery rhythms and bouncy melodies. There’s some organ floating around in there and drummer Chris Tomson, who had been held in check throughout much of the song, opens up just before the final verse.
Despite the facts that this was a the debut performance of a song in their first concert in almost two years, the band sounds tight and confident. So obviously they are doing something more than creating bizarre mashups of Annie Lennox and Carly Rae Jepsen.
They will close out the Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago tonight (Sunday, July 15). Vampire Weekend hope to have their new album out some time in 2012.
