Recent sales reports indicate an increase in console sales and a great month for Nintendo and Ubisoft.

Joystiq reports that June was an excellent, much-needed month of growth for the industry. NPD sales reports for June indicate hardware sales have more than doubled, whereas game and accessory sales increased by 24 percent. In particular, Mario Kart 8 and Watch Dogs sold the most compared to their cohorts, taking the top two spots for June's highest sales numbers.

"The 106 percent increase in hardware sales was lifted entirely by console hardware sales, which were up by over 200 percent," said Liam Callahan, an NPD analyst.

Now $100 cheaper without a Kinect, the Xbox One has doubled its sales last month, but Sony claims it sold the most next-gen consoles, with the PlayStation 4 winning over Xbox One for the sixth month in a row. Wii U sales have increased 48 percent, which can be attributed almost entirely to the release of Mario Kart 8. While Mario Kart 8 didn't take the top spot, we should note that Watch Dogs' sales were comprised of its combined sales across five different platforms.

Here is NPD's list of the top selling games for June 2014 (along with which systems sold the most for each title in decreasing order):
