White Stripes Record Sells for $12,700 on eBay

A rare 7-inch 45 of the second single by the White Stripes, ‘Lafayette Blues’ bundled with ‘Sugar Never Tasted So Good,’ sold for $12,700 on eBay, What Sells Best is reporting. The auction ended this morning (July 2).

In 1998, Detroit-based indie label Italy Records produced only 15 copies of the single on red-and-white vinyl, with label owner Dave Buick hand painting the sleeve. The lower left corner of the back side of the sleeve notes that this is No. 1 of 15. The band sold the records for $6 at one of their gigs at the Gold Dollar, a club in Detroit. Six years later, Jack White recalled the difficulty in selling this particular copy.

“Then we went in to sell them and you can’t pick!” he told the Guardian. “You had to buy the first one, and there was a ton of people standing around waiting for someone to buy the first one, because they didn’t want the first one. They wanted the tenth one.”

The seller claims to have stored the record since purchasing it without having ever played it. In addition, the seller has a Certificate of Authenticity signed by White on the letterhead of his Third Man Records.
