It started on a late summer's night in Salina, KS, and except for a slight detour at the hands of their cross-city rival MacArthur Highlanders (who too find themselves battling for a state title this weekend), the road has led the Lawton Wolverines directly to the 6A-II State Finals Friday night in Moore. But how did they get there, and exactly how long was their journey?

1987 was the last time the Lawton Wolverines took home a state championship in football. Its been 27 years since the team even played for the state crown in any division.

  • Wolverines 49 Salina Central 3

    The road to this years final game started with a 5 hour bus ride to northern Kansas. Jack Meservy threw for 264 yards and 3 touchdowns and Kalin Sadler had 142 receiving yards, but it was the Wolverine defense that set the tune for the season to come, as they held the Salina Central Mustangs to less than 150 yards of total offense on the night.

  • MacArthur Highlanders 35 - Wolverines 33

    Week 2 saw the Wolverines caught by surprise by their long-time, cross-town rivals the MacArthur Highlanders as MacArthur scored on their first two drives and never looked back as Meservy threw for 248 yards and 4 touchdowns and Darryel Patterson ran for 114 yards and had 126 receiving yards, scoring three times, but it wasn't enough as the eventual city champion Highlanders upset Lawton High.

  • Wolverines 61 - Sapulpa Chieftains 21

    In week 3, a focused band of Wolverines welcoming the Sapulpa Chieftains to town and Lawton was not about to be surprised again as they scored 47 first half points on the way to a trouncing of their guests. Jack Meservy threw for 357 yards and 5 touchdowns. Darryel Patterson ran for 98 yards and a score, while Kalin Sadler had 154 receiving yards and three scores on the night. Bryce Birt had a pair of interceptions on the defensive side, while special teams also contributed with a Chris Smotherman punt block in the first half.

  • Wolverines 55 - Putnam City West Patriots 0

    Week 4 saw the Wolverine offense continue to roll and the defense continue to dominate as Lawton rolled over, through and past their guests the Putnam City West Patriots.

    Tre Curry run for 151 yards and a score and Darryel Patterson added 140 yards and a TD as the Wolverines totalled 410 yards on the ground for the night.

    Brice Birt had another 2 interception night on defense and Chris Jones added an interception for Lawton.

  • Wolverines 42 - Enid Plainsmen 0

    Week 5 saw the Wolverines hitting the road for the first time since the opening week for a game that many thought would be a tough battle. It did not turn out to be that contest as the Wolverine defense chalked up its second straight shutout and Darryel Patterson each contributed interceptions in the win.

    Patterson dominated on offense also, as the senior ran for 187 and a touchdown for Lawton.

  • Wolverines 32 - Stillwater Pioneers 14

    Week 6 saw the Wolverines welcoming the Stillwater Pioneers and the Wolverine train just kept rolling along.

    Darryel Patterson ruled the walk as he carried the Wolvering offense with 235 rushing yards and 5 touchdowns as the one man wrecking crew outgained the entire Stillwater team 236 total yards to 145.

  • Wolverines 72 - Eisenhower Eagles 27

    Week 7 saw the renewal of the Wolverine's other cross-town rivalry. This time is was the Eisenhower Eagles set to do battle with Lawton High, but this time the Wolverines weren't about to be surprised by an inter-city rival.

    Darryel Patterson ran for 118 yards and Tre Curry added 117 and a pair of touchdowns as LHS led 48-0 at the half and cruised to a 45 point win. The Wolverines stormed to 367 on the ground and 607 yards of total offense in total.

    The Wolverine defense hauled in 4 interceptions and LHS made history on special teams as Kaitlyn Cox kicked a 42-yard field goal, becoming the first female in Oklahoma history to kick a field goal in competition. Cox also kicked 9 extra points on the night, scoring 12 points in total for the game.

  • Wolverines 41 - Prime Time Prep Spartans 26

    LHS welcomed Dion Sanders and his Prime time Prep Academy to town for a non-conference week 8 tussle and the Wolverines had everything they could handle for the first 45:35 of the ball game.

    But in the end, the Lawton defense came up HUGE, scoring to touchdowns in the final 3 minutes to seal a hard fought victory.

    With Lawton holding a slim 2 point lead and PTA in possession of the ball with less than 3 minutees left in the game, Levi Cain stepped in front of a Spartan pass and ran it back 21 yards to give LHS an 8 point lead.

    But the Spartans drove quickly up the field, hoping to have a chance to tie the game and send it into overtime. Those hopes were dashed though as Bryce Birt intercepted an errant pass and running it 65 yards to give his squad breathing room and sealing the victory. Darryel Patterson ran for 232 yards and a pair of scores for Lawton High.

  • Wolverines 24 - Mid West City Bombers 22

    Kaitlyn Cox hit a 37 yard field goal with 1:35 remaining, giving the Lawton Wolverines a hard fought, 2-pt victory over the Mid West City Bombers in what can only be described as their toughest win of the year.

    Darryel Patterson ran for 169 yards and a touchdown and adding 35 yards receiving for 204 yards of total offense. But the hero for the night was Cox, who calmly stepped up and nailed the 37 yard kick with plenty to spare to turn a 1-point deficit into a two-point victory.

  • Wolverines 42 - Choctaw Yellowjackets 28

    The Wolverines wrapped up the regular season trying to secure home field advantage for the opening round of the playoffs by traveling to Choctaw to take on the Yellowjackets.

    The Wolverines took a 21 point lead to the locker room at the half and held off a tough Choctaw team to secure the win, and by doing so, completed the conference season a perfect 6-0.

    Jack Meservy threw for 284 yards and a touchdown and Darryel Patterson ran for 170 yards, while LHS got 3 rushing touchdowns from Tre Curry and 2 more from Meservy as they wrapped up the regular season.

  • Wolverines 56 - Bartlesville Bruins 24

    The Wolverines opened up the quarter finals of the 6A-II playoffs by welcoming the Bartlesville Bruins to Cameron Stadium, in what would be the only change Lawton would have to host a playoff game.

    LHS didn't waste any time, scoring 35 first-half points on the way to a 32 point first round win. The  ever-dependalble Darryel Patterson rushed for 192 yards and 3 touchdowns, while the rarely used Dequan Weaver added another 98 yards and a score on the ground for LHS. Tre Curry, limited to 8 carries, mostly on short-yardage situations added 2 td for Lawton.

  • Wolverines 42 - Booker T. Washington 27

    The semi-final round would begin the neutral site portion of the play-offs, as Lawton would have to take to the road and travel to Yukon to take on their semi-final opponents, the Hornets of Booker T. Washington.

    Washington seemed to have the Wolverines number in the first half and went to the locker room at the half with a 24-14 lead. But Jack Meservy would lead the Wolverines to score on their first two drives of the second half and they wouldn't look back as the defensive side held the Hornets to just a field goal after the half on the way to victory and a trip to the state finals.

    Meservy threw for 240 yards and 3 touchdowns, tossing td passed to Tristain Gooden, Kalin Sadler and Bryce Birt. Darryel Patterson contributed 207 yards and a pair of touchdowns on the ground for LHS.
