
Johnson Family House In Lawton Placed On National Register
The Oklahoma State Historic Preservation Office recently announced that the Johnson Family House in Lawton, Oklahoma, will be added to the National Register of Historic Places! The house was the home of the late James Carl Sr. Johnson and Lucille Johnson.
The house is located at the corner of East Gore Boulevard and Northeast Maine Street. it was constructed in 1938 and "was added to the National Register for its association with the development of and location in Lawton’s first All-Black neighborhood."
The house has three buildings in total: a single-story main house, a detached one-car garage (added in 1946), and a secondary, single-story dwelling built in 1944 that the family referred to as "the little house."
According to the Oklahoma State Historic Preservation Office, the house "is significant for its role in the family’s connection to the All-Black neighborhood, the city of Lawton, the segregation of the Lawton Public Schools, and the influence of Albert Johnson Sr. on the community."
Son of the Johnsons is honored by the house being placed on the National Register.
Albert Johnson Jr. is the son of Albert Sr. and Lucille Johnson and grew up in the house placed on the National Register. In an interview with KSWO, Johnson Jr. stated that he is honored for the house to be placed on the National Register.
"Now to know that this home is going to be on the national registry and be kept and reflect back on those days of when I was a child is very honoring," Johnson Jr. said.
