
New Documentary Shines A Light On Jim Thorpe’s Incredible Journey
Oklahoma has many athletes to be proud of, but one of the greatest athletes to come out of the state was Jim Thorpe. Thorpe wasn't just an impressive athlete from Oklahoma - he's considered one of the greatest athletes of all time. And a new documentary that recently premiered on The History Channel tells the story of Thorpe's life and legacy, and it can now be viewed on streaming.
The new documentary is titled "Jim Thorpe: Lit By Lightning" and focuses on Thorpe's athletic achievements and the role identity plays in sports. Thorpe was born near what is now Prague, Oklahoma, in the late 1880s and was the first Native American to win a gold medal at the Olympics for the United States. He grew up on the Sac and Fox Nation reservation in Indian Territory.
Thorpe played multiple sports, but one two gold medals in the pentathlon and decathlon at the Stockholm 1912 Olympic Games. Thorpe also played six seasons in Major League Baseball, was a two-time college football All-American and was a charter member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Most people would ask, "What couldn't Jim Thorpe do?"

The new documentary, "Jim Thorpe: Lit By Lightning," was produced by Uninterrupted, which is an athlete storytelling brand owned by Lebron James and Maverick Carter. The documentary was directed by Chris Eyre who is a Cheyenne and Arapaho filmmaker known for his movie "Smoke Signals" and AMC series "Dark Winds."
The documentary premiered on Monday, July 7 on The History Channel. The documentary is now available on streaming through The History Channel and on The History Channel's website.
