Although human basketball season wrapped up, there's a little twist we do in Oklahoma that can really take things up a notch on the court. If you've never of donkey basketball, or burro basketball, then buckle up. Because this already happens at numerous small towns in Oklahoma and the best part is - it can happen anywhere if you want to bring it to your area.

Recently, Coweta Public Schools joined the club of schools in Oklahoma that have brought donkey basketball to their community. The event was part of the school's senior class fundraiser and is generally used as a fundraising event for most schools.

The idea is simple: ride the donkeys on the court and get the most baskets, just like in regular basketball. But the challenge isn't just from riding an animal, it comes from working with DONKEYS.

Donkey basketball is hilarious and so much harder than it looks.

They're known to be incredibly stubborn animals with the strength, ability and persisitence to just quit listening the moment they've decided they've had enough. When you watch videos of previous donkey basketball games, you can see exactly why the struggle is so much harder than if they were riding any other animal.

Students also have a few rules to abide by while playing, such as:

  • If players pass the ball to one another, both players must be mounted.
  • Players must be mounted when shooting, blocking shots, or stealing the ball.
  • Players cannot hold the ball for more than 15 seconds.

Generally, the game is much shorter than a traditional basketball game and has less rounds.

Texas-based group brings the donkeys & helps host fundraiser in Oklahoma.

The most popular group that travels to 23 states across the U.S., including Oklahoma, to help host this unique fundraiser is Dairyland Donkey Ball. They bring the donkeys and help keep students and faculty safe whenever they're playing on the courts.

They recently worked with Hominy Schools this year to host another fundraiser for the school's sophomore prom fund.

The donkeys wear protective, non-scuffing rubber shoes that, according to the Dairyland Donkey Ball website, cannot damage gyms and basketball courts. Although the donkeys are safe enough to tolerate riders, they still have a stubborn nature that might encourage them to try to throw a rider off - which has to be everyone's favorite part.

They also provide the safety gear and make sure to clean up after the game, they just need schools to provide the players, tickets and audiences.

If a community is interested in hosting the event for a fundraiser, they can reach out directly to Dairyland through their website here.
