January is Wizard's Month and parts of Oklahoma are celebrating with some much needed creative fun. You'll notice that each of these places has taken what they do and added a little bit of a wizard-themed twist to it. It's events like these that help keep small businesses and close communities alive.

We all need a little bit of stress relief during this time of year and Chickasha's small businesses are coming together to help create some for folks near central Oklahoma. Even if you've never read or watched Harry Potter, this "Calling All Wizards" experience is perfect for anyone wanting to try something new and unique.

Each one of these businesses has added something new to their roster for January. Find out your house with the sorting hat cookie at Rock Island Candy.

If you already know you're a Griffyndor, you can let the ladies and gentlemen at Nailynn know and they'll make sure to help you wear your house colors proudly. Or let the folks at Nano Repair know what needs fixed and they'll show you their version of the "reparo" spell.

Each place has agreed to show the community something a little different during January and the idea has really been catching on. Originally, when they started the event, there were only eight businesses participating. As of recently, the list grew to 12. And who's to say there won't be more by the end of the month?

Keep Small Businesses Going in Oklahoma

Businesses in the U.S. seem to have been closing left and right. In October 2024, Coresight Research reported a staggering 6,189 major retailers closing.

In fact, just yesterday, Monday, Jan. 6, Lawton lost one of the longest standing popular Tex-Mex restaurants in town. Last year, Oklahoma also lost one of the most iconic dance venues to date. It's difficult for everyone to make money these days, but especially disheartening for small businesses.

But that's not to say that there isn't anything to look forward to this year. While many businesses were closing, several were being opened. Coresight Research also noted that, while the nation saw all of those businesses closing, we still saw 5,300 stores announce openings in 2024.

But the only way to keep them going is to shop while you can! So take advantage of creative ideas like this one that help keep small businesses going.

Calling All Wizards! That's the theme for Chickasha's Wizarding experience that Oklahomans will be able to participate in all through January.

Oklahoma Cold Weather Checklist

Those first big cold fronts always seem to catch Oklahoma by surprise. In one big swoop, the nearly 100° days turn into sudden freezes overnight. We'll still have warm days here and there throughout winter, but now is as good a time as now to start on your cold weather checklist. Easy small tasks that add up to bother energy savings and comfort in the home. They'll also allow you to avoid the big headaches and repair bills that happen so frequently in our bipolar climate.
