Things To Do In Lawton – Fort Sill
I know I've mentioned it before but I hate it when I hear someone say "There's nothing to do here" when talking about living in Lawton. It's simply not true. There is a ton of stuff to do here in Lawton and the surrounding area, the biggest problem is most people are boring at heart.
You know what I'm talking about. The loudest criers of boredom in these woods are generally the types of Karens and Jareds that only ever experience life, or what they assume life should be like on their phones.
"Ooo, OKC has rapids and theme parks and Bricktown... Lawton literally has nothing" she said as she casually looked up from a Candy Crush streak she actually paid real money to play... But just as one opinion doesn't magically diminish another, OKC or Dallas' everyday events have zero influence on whether Lawton does or doesn't.
I'm convinced this mentality is just a side-effect of the new generation coming up having been raised on screens. Entertainment-on-demand and instant gratification was just the way their lives unfolded, crippling them as humans in the process. Most likely the type to talk back to their parents and get away with it.
There are no boring places, only boring people. That much in life is absolutely true, and most people are comfortable living their lives that way. They refuse to go out and experience the world around them and then lay the blame on the place they live... as if your entertainment was someone else's responsibility.
To be fair, I'm guilty of it too. I moved around a lot when I first got into my radio career. That's just the average life of a DJ... Get a job, do it for a while, seek out the next bigger offer, repeat. I moved 13 times in ten years, and no matter where I ended up, I always convinced myself "Life will be better when I finally move to (the next place)"
I actually ended up living and working in one of the country's biggest cities and you know what? There was nothing to do there. That's when I realized I was just living a boring life.
So what's the fix? I can't tell you that. Only you can decide to be happy for yourself. I do know that if you're not happy in Lawton, you won't be happy at the next place you end up. You have to create happiness, it doesn't just happen on its own. Force yourself to get up and go do something. Take a walk, meet your neighbors, make new less-boring friends. Go into the mountains, get out of the car and explore it. Hit the museums. Go have a meal at some one-horse, single-stoplight hole-in-the-wall. Everyone deserves a happy life, start living yours.
