‘American Idol’ Winner Caleb Johnson Rocks With KISS on Season Finale

It’s time to pull out the big guns when a TV season is coming to an end and Wednesday night ‘American Idol’ brought out the ‘Love Gun’ courtesy of KISS. The band was part of the festivities, performing a medley of tracks with this season’s eventual winner Caleb Johnson.

As seen in the video above, Johnson was able to rock out with Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons and rest of the band on both ‘Love Gun’ and ‘Shout It Out Loud,’ before sharing a pretty cool moment after the performance when his brother, a big KISS fan in full makeup, finally got to meet his idols.

Before Wednesday’s show aired, Johnson spoke with the Asheville Citizen-Times about the planned performance with KISS. He stated, “I rehearsed with KISS last night and they were absolutely amazing. They were so welcoming. I heard that they spent $25,000 worth of pyros for the show and when we rehearsed it, it was literally like the Fourth of July. It’s insane, and I’m going to have a blast.”

Aside from the rehearsal, Johnson said he was thankful for the time the band spent with him offstage as well. “What’s so cool is we actually just hung out like in a room for about 45 minutes. They were so incredibly nice and hilarious and I think they actually want to meet my brother and hang out with him. They were seriously some of the nicest people I’ve ever met. And they were so insightful and just gave me a lot of good feedback. Gene Simmons was like, ‘Hey man, I’m not going to sugarcoat this, but man, you’ve got the goods.’ And I was like, ‘Wow, that’s an icon of rock and roll.’ And it was just crazy.”

On top of the KISS performance, Johnson was able to show a little more of his rocker side during his final ‘Idol’ appearances, performing Aerosmith‘s ‘Dream On’ and taking on Queen‘s ‘We Will Rock You’ and the Bryan Adams/Tina Turner track ‘It’s Only Love’ during an opening medley with fellow finalist Jena Irene.

As for KISS, you can look for even more pyro igniting this summer when they join Def Leppard for a major summer run. Dates can be found here. And check out our recent ‘Wikipedia: Fact or Fiction’ video with former KISS guitarist Ace Frehley below.
