Behemoth’s Nergal Releases Me and That Man Video for Dark Folk Song ‘Ain’t Much Loving’

Behemoth‘s Nergal is known for his barbaric take on the black / death metal style and as a hardened Satanist. The visionary behind one of metal’s most uncompromising bands shocked fans when he revealed the folk project Me and That Man as his next musical venture. Rest assured, Nergal hasn’t gone full country on us, still offering up inarguably dark art as evident by the music video for the new song “Ain’t Much Loving.”

After some loose, despondent strumming, Nergal opens up with a cry of “Mother,” which will immediately draw comparisons to the iconic Danzig song. There’s traces of Danzig’s most somber moments (Danzig 4 in particular) along with the obvious influences of Leonard Cohen and Johnny Cash. Together, Nergal and his collaborator John Porter trade off agonized lines, each with their own gritty, soulful style as listeners sink further into a black oblivion.

“Ain’t Much Loving” is the second single off Me and That Man’s Songs of Love and Death debut, out March 24 on Cooking Vinyl. A music video was previously made for the leading track, “My Church Is Black.”

“With Me and That Man, the songs just come out in a very organic way. One would be bluesy, one would be more of a ballad, but put together they all made sense. I need Me and That Man to keep the balance, as the potential of my mother band seems limitless. It gets bigger and bigger, more advanced and more sophisticated… and darker …and blacker,” Nergal told Noisey.

Continuing, the frontman went on, “But Me and That Man is at the opposite pole, artistically speaking. With all the best art, once you have it in you, you have to release it, otherwise it becomes intoxicating and dangerous to your own system. This is how I deal with my emotions and my dark feelings and shadows. This is not happy music, but it’s liberating.”
