Courtney Love Reveals She Lost $27 Million in ‘Nirvana Money’

Spencer Kaufman, Loudwire

One of rock history’s most heated battles was long-fought between the surviving members of Nirvana and Courtney Love, the widow of frontman Kurt Cobain. The two parties were once butting heads over the fortune earned from the band’s royalties, but Love just revealed in a new interview that she spent a part of that fortune, $27 million, on various lawsuits.

Love spoke about finances during an interview with the UK’s Sunday Times, in which the Hole frontwoman says a lot of the $27 million went to settling a number of lawsuits.

Losing that amount of cash would be overwhelming for anyone, but Love has allowed herself to brush off the massive loss. “I know that’s a lifetime of money to most people, but I’m a big girl, it’s rock ‘n’ roll, it’s Nirvana money, I had to let it go,” says Love. “I make enough to live on, I’m financially solvent, I focus on what I make now.”

Love also claims that she turned to cocaine to help her keep track of her money. “I had to run very fast to look after my money and I felt cocaine helped me do that. So I started taking cocaine and that turned into nine months of crack.”

The controversial Love, however, reminds us that she hasn’t sold out the music of Nirvana to make a quick buck. “I’ve protected it [the Nirvana catalog] from everything from Kentucky Fried Chicken commercials to movies about board games,” Love says. “We’ve been offered $6 million for 18 seconds of one Nirvana song and I turned it down.”

Courtney Love is currently plotting to begin plans on a Kurt Cobain biopic “within the next year or so.”
