Things between former Megadeth members and Dave Mustaine aren’t as dramatic as you may think. In a new interview, former Megadeth drummer Shawn Drover had nothing but good things to say about his time with the legendary thrash band, noting that he and Dave Mustaine were “very good friends” for 10 years.

Drover kept his spot behind Megadeth’s kit from 2004-2014, making his recording debut with the band on 2007’s United Abominations. Now with Act of Defiance, Drover just released the band’s second album, Old Scars, New Wounds with fellow Megadeth alum Chris Broderick. Looking back on his time with Megadeth, Drover kept things positive from beginning to end during a chat with Talking Metal.

“I have nothing bad to say at all about that band. Dave Mustaine gave me a career, and I’ll always be thankful to him for that,” says Drover. “I was very good friends with him for 10 years, and at a certain point, I just wanted to move on and express my own musical vision and do the things I wanted to do before I got too old. I’m not a spring chicken — I’m 51 years old — so I just started to think if I want to do something, the clock’s ticking here. Oddly enough, Chris was kind of thinking the same thing, so we just made a decision: why don’t we do our own thing?”

Drover continues, “I let Chris and [David] Ellefson know that I’d left. I quit first, and Chris pretty much did it almost right away as well, so it was kind of a double whammy. I let him know what I was wanting to do. I wanted to get right back at it and express my own musical vision, and he was, like, ‘I was thinking about the same thing.’”
