Lawton High's starters only played a half, but what a half it was.

The Wolverines rolled up 472 yards on their way to a 47-0 halftime lead on the Sapulpa Chieftains, then they let the backups take and finish off a 61-21 win Thursday night at Cameron Stadium.

Sapulpa (1-2) started with the ball, but went three and out, punting away initiating a theme for the first half. Six plays later Lawton High had its first touchdown as Jack Meservy hit Darreyl Patterson for a 19-yard touchdown for a 7-0 lead. After the insuing kick off, it took just three plays and 30 seconds, as Bryce Birt intercepted a Sapulpa pass at the Chieftain 42-yard line, taking it the distance for another TD.

"I thought we played about as good a first half as you could play," LHS head coach Randy Breeze said. "We're an explosive-type offense. An explosion play to us is 15 yards or more and I think we had a dozen of those the first half. I was real proud of the offense. That's about as good a half as we've played in a long, long time."

It was three plays and out once again as Sapulpa punted the ball away again, driving Lawton High all the way back to its own 1 yard line.

The Wolverines seemed undaunted by the challenge of driving the entire length of the field as Patterson picked up 44 yards on the ground, Kalin Sadler picked up 8 on a reverse and receptions by Birt and Terryl Shaw hauled in receptions of 6 and 10 respectively before Meservy hit Sadler for a 31-yard touchdown.

Meservy then completed his final 14 passes on his way to a 21 for 23, 367 yards and five touchdown day.

Other than blocking and extra point attempt by Caitlyn Coc (her first miss of the season), Sapulpa couldn't do anything on either side of the ball in the first half against the Wolverines. The Chieftains gained just 61 yards in the first half and didn't pick up a first down, outside of two via penalties, until 2:26 left in the half. They picked up two on back-to-back plays before Birt intercepted Chieftain quarterback Tre Bilby again.

That interception set up Sadler's third touchdown reception of the half and the 47-0 halftime difference. He caught seven passes for 153 yards, including a 73-yard touchdown on the first play of a drive with 4:14 left in the half.

Zack Hannah and the Wolverine secondary offensive team took the field to start the second half of the game and after scoring once again, the Wolverines held a 54-0 lead early in the third quarter. Sapulpa was finally able to mount some offense against the Wolverine second and third string defense, with Bilby keading a 68 yard to put the Chieftans on the board midway through the third quarter. Hannah and the Wolverines were not about to let up as Chris Jones took the Chieftain kickoff back to midfield and Hannah and the second team drove 51 yards to paydirt and a 61-7 lead.

Sapulpa put pride over the risk of injury as they left there starting offensive unit in the game, which did lead to a pair of meaningless fourth quarter touchdowns. They almost saw their worst fears come to light as quarterback Bilby took a tremendous hit late in the game, forcing him off the field for a play, but he returned to the field after just a play to lead to the Chieftains to their final touchdown and a 61-21 final score.

The Wolverines will next take on Putnam City West Friday night at 7 pm at Cameron Stadium. You can catch all the action live on Z94 and Z94.com.
