Scott Asheton, drummer for proto-punk giants the Stooges, has died at the age of 64. His old friend and bandmate Iggy Pop broke the news on his Facebook page today.

Asheton co-founded the Stooges along with his older brother Ron (who passed away in 2009) and Pop in 1967, playing drums on the band’s first three albums: 1969’s ‘The Stooges,’ 1970’s ‘Fun House’ and 1973’s ‘Raw Power.’

When the group reunited in the mid ’00s for a series of concerts and a 2007 comeback album, ‘The Weirdness,’ Asheton was there. He also played on last year’s ‘Ready to Die’ album. Besides Pop, he was the only Stooge to play on all of the band’s albums.

Pop wrote on Facebook:

My dear friend Scott Asheton passed away last night. Scott was a great artist, I have never heard anyone play the drums with more meaning than Scott Asheton. He was like my brother. He and Ron have left a huge legacy to the world. The Asheton’s have always been and continue to be a second family to me.

The cause of death hasn’t been announced. Asheton leaves behind a wife and daughter, according to Pop.
