‘The Walking Dead’ Midseason Finale Wrap-Up: Did [SPOILER] Really Die?

The Walking Dead Season 4 Finale Spoilers Scott Gimple Robert Kirkman
AMC

And so, ‘The Walking Dead‘ season 4 has come to a brief intermission, closing out the first half of the season with last night’s “Too Far Gone,” and picking up again in 2014 with its February 9 premiere. Before we get there however, what Easter eggs might we have missed from the finale? Was one of the big deaths a fakeout? Find out the future of ‘The Walking Dead’ season 4 from the producers themselves!

Spoiler warnings from here on out, but suffice to say, ‘The Walking Dead’ season 4′s midseason closer finally brought the prison arc to a close, dropping more than a few bodies as we head into the next phase of the AMC horror drama. The deaths of Hershel, the Governor and a number of unnamed extras not withstanding however, more than a few fans were left puzzled by baby Judith’s apparent demise, given that Rick and Carl only found the baby’s bloody car seat.

It isn’t the first time fans have been left scratching their heads by a ‘Walking Dead’ death either, considering that Lori’s remains curiously disappeared into the protruding belly of a walker by the time Rick arrived, but did the AMC drama intend for us to read Judith as dead, given the unaccounted for survivors that could have easily picked up the baby on their way out?

Showrunner Scott Gimple played coy with The Hollywood Reporter, pointing to the walkers lurking about in saying “It did not look good and I don’t want to say one way or another but what you see tells a story.” Series creator Robert Kirkman seemed a bit more optimistic with TVGuide, adding “Maybe she’s dead, but if she’s alive, that changes the story in some interesting ways moving forward as we go into some of the other stories from the comics that happened after the prison where Judith wasn’t present. It’s fun to think about how she could potentially change those stories if she is alive.”

As for where we’ll see the scattered groups of survivors head next, Kirkman previewed that the series would veer back toward the comic’s post-prison storylines after its Woodbury population detour. In particular, we’ll soon see the introductions of comic characters Abraham, Rosita and Eugene, though who encounters them first, where, and what road they might take the survivors toward remains to be seen. “While there will be quite a bit of scenes that are adapted directly from the comics, which I’m very excited about, we are still going to be changing things and keeping people guessing and adding a lot of new elements in the story as well.”

We’ve seen from the most recent clip that Rick and Carl will have their own adventure in the February 9 premiere, which looks to be adapted from a similar storyline in which Carl fended for himself while Rick lay in recovery from his injuries at the prison. Don’t expect that infamous injury to play a hand in future storyline however, as Kirkman considers the matter somewhat resolved with the Governor’s demise, the injury proving somewhat impractical for TV purposes regardless. Instead, Rick will have more emotional wounds to contend with, including the apparent death of his daughter, and the loss of the group’s moral center in Hershel.

Oh, and lest we forget, Reddit users picked up on a brief Easter egg from the finale, in which the crazed survivor Clara whom Rick had encountered in season 4 premiere “30 Days Without An Accident” made it to the prison after all, albeit not as she’d initially hoped. The camera lingered on the walker briefly in the closing moments, her oversized jacket proving a dead giveaway of her identity.

You can read more about ‘The Walking Dead”s decisions to kill off Hershel and the Governor at the links above, but in the meantime, what say you? Did “Too Far Gone” provide an exciting enough climax to the prison arc? Where would you want to see Rick and and the others end up when ‘The Walking Dead’ season 4 returns in February 2014?
